Best Booth Types for This Venue
This venue only comes up for us when a client does a full buyout — 50 to 90 guests taking over the whole restaurant. When that happens, set up in the back room and lean into the atmosphere. The exposed beams, warm lighting, and Old West aesthetic make for photos that look like they came from a high-end editorial shoot. And the food is genuinely exceptional — guests who arrive skeptical about the western theme leave talking about the steaks. It's one of those events where everyone is already in a great mood before they even get to the booth.

Everything we know about Cowboy Star Restaurant & Butcher Shop
Cowboy Star isn’t a traditional event venue — it’s a fine dining steakhouse and butcher shop in San Diego’s East Village. But when a client does a full restaurant buyout, it becomes one of the most atmospheric and memorable event settings we work in.
The restaurant has been a San Diego institution since 2008, winning the Orchid Award for Interior Design the same year it opened. Walk in and you understand why immediately: exposed beam ceilings, cowboy accents, classic American landscape photography, a dramatic open display kitchen as the focal point of the main room, and a fireplace lounge with large leather booths that feels genuinely private. It’s a full sensory experience before anyone even looks at a menu.
For full buyouts — the restaurant accommodates 50 to 90 guests — our setup is always in the back dining room. The exposed beam ceilings give full clearance for any backdrop height, the warm amber lighting photographs beautifully without any additional setup on our part, and the space has a naturally separated feel that gives guests their own world for the evening.
The food is the other thing worth mentioning. Cowboy Star serves USDA prime-aged steaks sourced from independent family ranches, fresh sustainable seafood, and a cocktail program that matches the room. Guests arrive for the event and stay for the meal — by the time they get to the photo booth they’re relaxed, well-fed, and genuinely having a great time. That shows in every photo.
After 7 events here since 2018, Cowboy Star is one of those venues where the atmosphere does most of the heavy lifting. Set up in the back room, let the space breathe around you, and the photos will look like nothing else in your portfolio.
